Our neighbor died and we are considering taking the cockatiel. We know nothing about the bird except that it tries to bite anyone who gets near. Even the previous owner had the same reaction. So I don't know if it's always going to be a grouch, or is retrainable to be friendly. He??? is 10 years old. Also, having never talked, is there any chance of teaching speech at that age?? Please reply, we need to decide by Monday July 8 or someone else will take him.

A ten year old, biting cockatiel would be a major undertaking for anyone, even the most experienced aviculturist. If you are interested in a cockatiel for a companion, it would be better to begin with a young, hand tame tiel. If you are wanting one in hopes of it talking, males seem to be better at mimicking than females.
