My boyfriend wants to buy a german sheepdog, but we already have an almost two years old cockatiel boy who is very tame. So my guestion is how to deal with a puppy and my cockatiel. What is the best way to get them used to each other? My bird is able to fly and he is out from his cage always when we are home. Please help me with this new situation which is coming to us.

Dear Susanna,
You are about to embark into an adventure, while not at all impossible, one that will prove to be a real challenge.
We would keep the cockatiel caged when the puppy is first brought into your home. This way the bird is protected and will allow the two to become acquainted from a safe distance. Watch the reactions of both pets. You'll have to decide when the time is right to allow your bird freedom from it's cage.
Not unlike a cockatiel, puppies are curious creatures that can cause havoc in no time at all. Extremely close and undivided attention will be required from you.
It would not be right to keep the bird caged all the time, especially, after it has become accustomed to all the freedom it enjoys. This may also be one of the rare occasions that clipped wings would not be best.
You have some really unnerving times ahead. We cannot tell you enough times, when the two are allowed out at the same time, keep your eyes on them at all times. Eventually the two will probably be pals, but adjustments take time.
