I have a lutino cockatiel whom I bought when he was 8 weeks old. He is now almost 5 months old. Bunny had a check up with an avian vet 1 month ago and was found to be in good health. He has always preened himself frequently and has beautifully formed and very soft feathers. He gets lots of petting and loves neck rubs. In the past 2 weeks, however, I have noticed the occasional small, fully formed, yellow tipped feather float into the air when he fluffs and shakes after preening. These are only small feathers and only 2-3 come out per day but previously only tiny white segments of feathers could be seen in the air after the preen-fluff-shake routine. Could this be the onset of his first moult occurring before the usual 7-9 months? Could this be related to the onset of the warmer weather as it only began to get hot here in the past couple of weeks? If not, then I would worry about Bunny's diet and perhaps his vitamin intake. (Bunny had been weaned on to a seed diet when I bought him and, as he is not yet on an 80% granule diet, I give him a vitamin powder supplement. As Bunny would not drink his water with the vitamin powder in it, I sprinkle the vitamin powder on his food. I know he takes in the powder because he always has 2-3 more watery movements after a vitamin treated meal.). I had not been suspecting a vitamin deficiency because nothing (including the vitamin powder routine) has changed in the past month. If anything I think Bunny's intake has improved as he is experimenting with new foods.
Sure does sound like molting to us. Sometimes it appears to us as though young birds always molt, even if it's just a little. Molting at times, other than the usual twice yearly, is triggered by change in length of lighting and temperatures. Everything appears normal.
We feel that feeding a diet of quality seed or pellets, supplemented with fresh fruits, vegetables, proteins and cuttlebone or mineral block, is balanced enough without adding powders to the water or food, unless prescribed by your bird's vet.
