I have a pair of tiels that have been mates for over 10 years. During the six years that I have had them the female picks and plucks the male. His neck to his ears are plucked clean, The skin has never been broken. I tried seperating them however they seem unhappy when apart even with their cages right next to each other. Can you tell me why she does this and what if anything can be done about it.

Thanks, Faye

Faye,

The picking and plucking is thought to be brought on by frustration and the frustration is from wanting to breed and raise babies. Thankfully not all birds go through this to that degree.

Here's your choices as we see them:
  1. Set them up to breed, complete with nest box.
  2. Keep them separated.
  3. Let them continue as they are.

If you aren't interested in raising cockatiels, we're afraid it's a matter of choosing the less of the evils. These birds obviously have built a long and loving relationship over the years.
