We just found a male cockatiel on our backyard. We also have three cats and three dogs (two Old English Sheep dogs and a mixed breed terrier). We identified the bird as a cockatiel because it resembled the picture of a bird on the birdseed box, located on the shelf in our supermarket between the cat and dog food displays - with which we are already familiar. Based on the picture on the bird seed box, we located your website and confirm that the yellow markings and whistling are like those of a male cockatiel.
We have a large cage which used to house parakeets at one time. We are also checking the lost and found in the newspaper. The bird does have a metal ring on its foot.
Any suggestions or advice?
Regards,
Gene and Gail K.
Gene and Gail,
That metal band on the bird's foot may be your best place to begin. If it
is a closed traceable band, it will probably have something on it like NACS, NCS,
ACS, or SPBE. If one of these organization's initials is found, contact the
band secretary of that organization and give them the complete band number.
They should be able to trace the band number back to the breeder.
If it doesn't have a traceable band and you can't locate the owner, you then have the best breed of bird, in our opinion. It would be great to have the bird checked by a vet.
