In relation to "Solitary Cockatiel", I am wondering if a single Cockatiel can be happy without another bird companion. We have a male and although he gets a lot of attention when we're home he is alone most of the day when we are at work. He seems to adjust OK but he has these moods where he gets cranky and makes a call (sounds like "wheat! wheat!). I wonder if he is pining for a bird companion? I guess I feel guilty, but my husband doesn't want 2 birds because it's twice the responsibilty and 1 bird is a more personable pet. Is his pining my imaginaton? Please help.

Dear Guilty,

A single cockatiel makes an excellent pet. Unless a bird has become attached to another bird or birds, they probably don't grieve for something they have not seen or heard. As long as he gets lots of TLC, he will be just dandy.
