I have a bird that was rescued about 12 years ago. He has only been mine for the last 18 months or so. He was obviously abused or mishandled at some time. For the last ten years he has lived with my Mother in Law. She was always good to him, but knowing nothing of birds, she could not do much with him. I feel that I have made great strides with him recently, however I have no previous experience in raising or training birds. Can you recommend anything that would help me to re-civilize him? He was obviously hand fed/raised. He likes to be around me but he bites, hard! Any advice that would allow me to gain more of his trust and to be able to handle him would be great! he will sit on my hand, but only if it is covered, like with a Kleenex. He also sings to Kleenex, like a girl friend. Left alone with one he will sing to it and pick it up and get under it. Can I teach him some new songs and phrases? He knows a few.

Thanks a bunch,
Elizabeth and Hobo

Elizabeth,

It can be extremely difficult to reprogram a bird as old as yours but you are on the right path and we encourage you to continue on. If a tissue helps to clam him, there is no reason not to keep it as a part of his training. As his trust in you builds, why not make the size of the tissue smaller until hopefully, one is no longer required, rather, it can be offered as a reward for his deeds.
