Hello. I am new at being a cockatiel owner. My female cockatiel is 13 months old and loves to whistle. She whistles 6 different tunes. Lately she has gotten into a "cheeping" habit. I know she has food and gets regular attention (she is very spoiled). Is there a way to curb the cheeping? We love and enjoy Lucky but the cheeping nonstop can become irritating. She goes in cycles were she doesn't do it for a while and then for a couple days does it a lot.

Thank you.

Female cockatiels generally are the quieter of the sexes. All the whistling and "cheeping" you describe is more common in the male but not unheard of from a female. Our suggestion would be to try giving her a variety of toys, alternating them at regular intervals to keep her interested. If you have a mirror in her cage, remove it. Birds sometimes see themselves in a mirror and act as though they are bonding with another bird.

It sounds as though you have a very healthy and most contented companion, but if your nerves become too frayed, cover the cage as though it's beddie-bye time.
