We just found a young cockatiel and are concerned because when we are holding him/her it bobs its head and makes a continuous sound almost like a motor. It is okay when it is alone. What might be wrong?

Andy,

When a cockatiel feels threatened it will sometimes assume a defense posture. That usually means that it will wobble from side to side. It will also make a hissing sort of noise. Does this sound similar to what you have observed?

Obviously this bird has escaped from it's previous home and has been exposed to sights and sounds it has never known. It's our best guess that when it has had a chance to adapt to it's new home, it will be fine but we do recommend to have it checked by an avian vet.
