Hello! I am planning on getting a cockatiel (first time) and was
wondering if you know what kind I should get. Also, I have a dog and don't
want any fights between the two. Any suggestions?
Michelle D.
Dear Michelle,
Since you have a dog, your future cockatiel may need a little more of an adjustment period than is usual. We always advise people when they purchase a new bird, give it time. Be patient. A new resident may need 1, 2, 3 or more weeks before it feels safe in it's new home.
When you bring your new friend home, place it in it's cage. For the first few days, refrain from startling the bird. Talk to the bird in a comforting tone. The bird and the dog should have a long distance acquaintance. When the og has the run of the house, keep the bird caged and vice-versa. You'll have to make the decision of when to try having them "free" together but if and when you do, don't take your eyes off of them. It only takes an instant for disaster to strike.
What kind of cockatiel should you get? The most important thing to look for when shopping for a bird is a healthy bird. A healthy bird looks healthy. It has clean smooth feathers, bright eyes, a clean vent area and it will be alert. If it's wing feathers aren't clipped, watch the bird fly and perch without difficulities. We suggest you fin a reputable cockatiel breeder in your area. There are a lot of different mutations to choose from.
If you're wanting a cockatiel that "talks" or one that whistles, a male would be more favorable. If you want just a companion bird, either sex is great, as long as it's healthy.
