I am a new owner of a 6 mo old male cockatiel. I've had lots of experience previously with parakeets so have been trying to read up on info.
What a wonderful web site this is. Anyway, despite what the books say about giving new birds their "own space" for the first couple of weeks, "Lucas" seems to really want out of the cage and be with people. The owner said he didn't even know how to bite. I think we've taught him. Whenever we extend a hand or finger to change people or positions, he pecks away, harder as time goes by. I've done the standard "No bite" bridge and "get up" bridge, but it continues. I realized I've been the most consistent with taking him off my shoulder onto my hand when putting him back in his cage, and he probably doesn't want to go. So I'm trying to get him used to changing positions without putting him in his cage. He still doesn't like it and bites. Any suggestions?
Also, unfortunately, my bird was hand-fed and then put on wild bird seed only. While I'm introducing him to other foods, I've been adding a "super preen powder" that a pet store said would give him everything he needs! I don't put great store in what they said about putting a separate cup of grit in the bottom of the cage (as you said it's not necessary), etc. Is the powder helpful?
Thanks!
Lydia
Lydia,
Some birds can become territorial and by that we are saying they will
sometimes take exception to being disturbed in an area where they feel safe,
such as their cage or perched high. Perhaps if you or whoever was "working"
with Lucas were in a room away from his cage, he might not be as aggressive.
You also might try teaching Lucas behavior lessons below shoulder level.
We're not behaviorists but from our experiences and the advice we've read
from numerous publications, these tips with your kindness and patience
should prevail.
As for the diet, a supplemental vitamin and mineral powder of the recommended dosage should be fine until Lucas can enjoy the fresh vegetables and fruits he has been deprived of. Whole wheat bread and millet seem to be the two most popular treats to begin the introduction to proper diets. We are believers in that everything begins with a well balanced diet.
