I read in a bird magazine that allowing your pet to sit on your shoulder encourages aggression. Is this true? My 'tiel has no cage-mates and so constantly wants my company. I'm fine with that, but the shoulder is the most convenient place for her to be! Yet, I certainly don't want my sweet animal to become vicious. What should I do? -Carrie

Carrie,

Birds feel secure when they can perch high above almost everything. It is true that some birds do become more aggressive when perched high or on a shoulder, however, that behavior doesn't exit with all. If your bird has complete trust in you and has no need to feel more secure, he should remain the sweet companion he is now.
