My 4 1/2 year old female cockatiel occasionally draws her head & neck upwards and makes a yawning motion. Could this indicate any lingering respiratory trouble from a bout with a bacterial infection last January? She was treated successfully and is eating a great pelleted diet, getting exercise, and seems 100%. Is this behavior anything to worry about?
Sarah
I have a question about my lutino, Henrietta. She is about 10 months old. She tends to open her mouth widely now and then as if she is yawning except she does it a couple times in a row. She doesn't seem to do this often but will do it in spurts (four or five times one day and then not again for a couple days). Is this something you heard of before?
Thank you for your input,
Holly
Dear Sarah and Holly,
The yawning motion isn't unusual unless it occurs frequently. Though we
don't know definitely why they do this, it has been suggested it is due from
allergies, small obstructions in the esophagus, or it is actually a yawn.
