Toxic Fumes
The winter can be a dangerous time for our cockatiels because there is less fresh air let into the house. With no cross-ventilation, many fumes can reach your bird which might not any other time of the year. Beware of the following products all year long, but especially in the winter:
- Teflon. Not just on skillets, but on range drip pans, irons, ironing board covers, waffle irons, etc. When heated to over 500 degrees, teflon emits lethal fumes that will kill your 'tiel in minutes.
- Cleaning liquids
- Paints
- Turpentine
- Hairspray
- Perfume
- Nail polish
- Nail polish remover
- Cigarette smoke (one of the most toxic items on the list)
